TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m a freelance writer, and I’m especially interested in telling stories about scientists, artists, and entrepreneurs who do inspiring things in parts of the country that are often overlooked or misunderstood. I’m originally from Wisconsin, and I now live in Alabama after spending some time in Europe.

WHAT DOES BEING A "CENTRIST" MEAN TO YOU, AND WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED?

The center is the middle point of a circle. It’s the place where a wheel connects to an axle, where friction morphs into movement. A centrist is a human axle, someone who transforms disagreement into progress.

WHAT IS A POLICY ISSUE YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT AND WHY?

Shifting our society to green energy as quickly as possible must be a top priority for us, and we have to do a better job of protecting our water and other natural resources. I’m also very supportive of efforts to fix our troubled communications infrastructure. The FCC is badly in need of digital-era reform, and local news outlets will go extinct without some sort of public support. We need politicians who will protect the press, and we need creative solutions for restoring public trust in credible media.

HOW DO YOU THINK WE CAN UNITE OUR COUNTRY AND FIX POLITICS?

We have to reward politicians and bureaucrats who are honest, tolerant, and willing to compromise, and I think the Centrist Project is a great start in doing so. Moderate voices are often shouted down these days, but we can change that if we just keep talking.
