The following statement was released by the Centrist Project's Executive Director Nick Troiano in response to the legislation passed by Congress and signed by President Trump this morning:
"The passage of a $320 billion spending bill, immediately after a $1.5 trillion tax cut, demonstrates that there is no party of fiscal responsibility. There's not even a party pretending to be fiscally responsible anymore.
"Our country is going broke because our political system is broken. Democrats and Republicans are pursuing their short-term partisan interests over our long-term national interests and sticking the next generation with the bill. We don't need more shutdowns or more debt; we need real solutions to major problems – including our unsustainable federal budget.
"The Centrist Project remains committed to recruiting and supporting common sense, independent leaders who believe in the principle of stewardship and who put country over party. There has never been a more important time to give the American people a viable alternative to the failing two-party duopoly."
The Centrist Project has so far endorsed two independent candidates for Governor in 2018: Alaska Governor Bill Walker and Maine State Treasurer Terry Hayes. The organization will announce additional endorsements for Governor and U.S. Senate at the end of this month.
This week, businessman Neal Simon declared his independent candidacy for U.S. Senate in Maryland. Additional independent candidate announcements are expected in the weeks to come.
