My name is Thom Case. I am a retired police officer with 34 years of service. As a lot of retirees have done I have moved from Michigan to Florida. I have lived here about 4 years now and loving every minute.
The great country that I live in has somehow been divided. The right wing and the left wing can no longer seem to come together on issues that are in the best interest of the citizens of the United States. Being "Centrist" to me means that politicians that lean right will lean left when it is in the best interest of the country. Politicians that lean right will lean left when it's in the best interest of the country. Independent politicians are not beholding to any political party's dogma.
While there are many, the single issue to me would be health care. I'm pretty well set, but I have 5 children who are trying to make it. There were times where my oldest son and daughter had no insurance before the AHCA. I would like to see a single payer plan and I believe there is a way to do it; it just requires our political parties to come to the center and do what's good for it's citizens.
I believe the Centrist Project is a start. I'm fortunate enough to live in a diverse community. When I can engage in civil conversations with my neighbors who might not all agree on issues and we can walk away conceding that the other guy might have had a good idea, that give me hope. Take away labels (Republican/Democrat) hold politicians accountable for their rhetoric. Get the money out of politics and put together serious voting blocks of people and force politicians to partake in town hall style work shops. If they cannot answer the needs of the people, then vote them out.
It's going to take a lot of work to pull this together. I believe it can be done. I also get that there is a difference between the people that live in Alabama compared to the people who live in California, compared to the people who live in Michigan or New York. They all have different needs and they all have different expectations; however, nothing will ever come together unless we all start reading from the same page. Government has to address the safety and security; health and well being of it's citizens. Those are the concerns that affect all 50 states.
